A Sangak Bakery in Tehran
In 2022 I was working for a food culture media company called Whetstone Media. They published a print magazine and a podcast network (I was working on the pod side). Before I headed to Tehran to visit family, the magazine’s photo editor pitched me for a spot in the next issue: a photo essay of my travels. I was so humbled and ecstatic. I normally didn’t bring my camera out on the streets of Tehran when I visited, but this time I felt pulled to accept the offer. It was so special to see the city with new eyes. One day my parents and I decided to walk into the sangak bakery near my dad’s childhood home and ask if we could document. They seemed confused (who were we? Why them?) but shrugged and let us in anyway. The following are the images that I made during the 15-minute rush.
Some of the images were published within the essay in Whetstone Volume 11, where one of my photos from that trip made it to the cover.
